CommUNITY in Motion Virtual 5k
On April 24, 2026, we came together for the CommUNITY in Motion Virtual 5K, sponsored by the National Organization for Victim Advocacy and Purina, as part of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week.
This was more than a 5K, it was a celebration in motion for survivors and the pets who are part of their safety and healing. People walked, ran, rolled, biked, danced, and brought their dogs along for the journey. However they moved, they belonged. Every mile became a visible reminder that we show up for survivors, for accessibility, and for the animals who are often a lifeline in times of crisis. Together, we strengthened communities and expanded pathways to safety.
More than 300 individuals participated, many alongside their pets, showing what this kind of collective care looks like in action.
Participants shared photos and videos, highlighted their teams, and posted across social media using #CommUNITYinMotion, helping us celebrate the impact happening across the country.
People joined on their own and as teams, bringing coworkers, family, and friends.
Everyone was welcome, and they showed up.

Why Pets Matter
For many survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, trafficking, and other crimes, pets are a lifeline.
Yet too often, survivors face an impossible choice:
Leave without their pet or stay in danger.
Research shows that concern for pets can delay or prevent survivors from seeking safety.
This year’s 5K shines a light on the need for pet-inclusive safe havens, in partnership with RedRover’s Purple Leash Project and with national support from Purina. Alongside RedRover and our partners across the country, we are committed to ensuring survivors never have to choose between their own safety and the animals they love.
When survivors can bring their pets to safety, barriers fall.
